 | Kells Knotwork Pewter Spoon Ref: SP1001
The Book of Kells is an ornately illustrated manuscript, produced by Celtic monks around AD 800 in the style known as Insular art. It is one of the more lavishly illuminated manuscripts to survive from the Middle Ages and has been described as the zenith of Western calligraphy and illumination. The knotwork on this spoon is a fragment of the illumination used in the manuscript.Carved spoons are a traditional gift in wales where they signify a token for a sweetheart, to show a persons affections.Further more by tradtion a small spoon is given to a newborn child to ensure good fortune, i.e the saying born with a silver spoon - indicative of wealth.
